International organizations address war zone danger to civil aviation

In the wake of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 shooting down in Ukraine, ICAO will hold a “high level meeting” on Tuesday 29th July to discuss the danger to commercial flights overflying war zones.

The meeting at its Montreal headquarters, brings together the directors general of IATA, Airports Council International and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization.

ICAO stated in a release that “this meeting will discuss the appropriate actions to be pursued in order to more effectively mitigate potential risks to civil aviation arising from conflict zones.”

In recent days, several airlines suspended flights to Tel Aviv amid heightened tensions in the Middle East which saw a rocket striking less than two kilometres from that airport.
