Fly Jamaica aircraft runs off runway in Guyana

Fly Jamaica B757

A Fly Jamaica aircraft ran off the runway at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana early Friday morning.

The Boeing 757-200 aircraft was bound for Toronto Canada with about 118 passengers and 8 crew on board. Five persons have been reported as injured.

At about 75 miles away from the airport, the pilot reported that the aircraft was experiencing hydraulic problems and elected to return to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

An eye witness reported that upon touchdown, the landing gear collapsed and eventually broke through the fence at the end of the runway. The aircraft piloted by Captain Ferguson and no fatalities have been reported.

The fire and rescue services were on standby and raced to the scene to rescue the passengers and crew.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority which is preparing to host an international air transport conference just weeks away is investigating the incident.
