The Runway Lighting System at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) failed at approximately 23:30 hours on Thursday according to the management of the airport.

A press release from CJIA Corporation explained that the failure was due to a slack connection in a temporary cable which was installed to facilitate the airport expansion. Works are currently taking place on the extended section at the north-eastern end of the runway.

Portable runway lights compliant with international standards were deployed along the entire length of the runway to facilitate flights including Suriname Airways and Caribbean Airlines.

The main runway lighting system has been restored to normal operation.
