A United Airlines Dreamliner touched down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Tuesday making it the first time that the American carried has landed in Guyana.
The Boeing 787 landed at 2:10 p.m. from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, Texas on a charter mission for oil giant Exxon Mobil.
Since the closing of Guyana’s borders to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has had to rely on charter operations to move its employees in and out of Guyana.
The United Airlines’ Dreamliner arrival came just months after the first landing of that aircraft model in Guyana. The widebody Boeing 787 aircraft operated by British Airways flew into Guyana on April 28 from London on a similar mission to transport Exxon Mobil employees.
The Dreamliner’s arrival in Guyana has become a spectacle for aviation enthuiasts as it has taken 10 years for the revolutionary aircraft to land in the country.
The 787 Dreamliner introduced by Boeing utilizes composite materials which significantly reduces the aircraft weight. Less weight equates to less fuel burn and CO2 emmissions and increases the range of the plane. Aircraft structures are predominantly made of Aluminum which is heavier.
The temporary suspension of scheduled international passenger flights into Guyana has given rise to specially approved charter flights coming from places that are not common for the scheduled carriers flying the Guyana route. In addition, aircraft operated by carriers without scheduled routes to Guyana have been frequenting the country’s main international airport.
United Airlines is one of the big three American carriers together with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Delta previously operated into Guyana but ceased operations in May 2013. American began operating into Guyana from its Miami hub in Novenber 2018, but suspended its service after the country’s borders were closed.
Guyana temporarily sealed its borders on March 19 to all scheduled international passenger flights. A phased reopening of the borders is planned for August 1.
