The Panamanian carrier Copa Airlines announced the restart of its flights to a limited number of international destinations during the month of August.

Subject to permission from the respective countries, Copa Airlines will restart flights to ten international destinations including Guayaquil (GYE), Mexico City (MEX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), Quito (UIO) and Santiago de Chile (SCL). A significant ramp up of operations is planned for September.

The Government of Panama on July 31 issued a decree reopening the Tocumen International Airport for Panamanians and residents to travel to the country; and for intransit passengers who will spend less that six hours between flight.

Passengers are responsible for having the necessary immigration documents and complying with the health requirements for travel to each destination.

Copa is planning to operate three weekly of flights to Guyana from September 18 providing that the borders are reopened.

During the second quarter (Q2) of 2020, Copa only operated a small number of charters and humanitarian flights, amounting to less than 1% of its normal operating capacity.

At the end of Q2, Copa’s fleet totaled 102 aircraft — 6 Boeing 737MAX; 68 737-800; 14 737-700; and 14 Embraer-190 — but it intends to sell its 737-700 and E190 fleets in the weakened travel demand environment.

The decision to simplify its fleet comes after the majority of the carrier’s fleet has been grounded since March 22.

InQ2, Copa’s parent Copa Holdings reported a net loss of $386 million with cash burn averaging at $77 million per month. Operating revenues totaled $14.5 million, down 97.7% on the same period a year ago.
